Anonymous asked you call yourself "that nigerian kid" but you don't even understand your own language lol... :/

But “Nigerian” isnt a language…

Feelin’ crusty, aren’t you?

Parents: “It’s your fault that you refused to learn!”
Me: “But the only time you speak Edo language is when you’re either insulting me, disciplining me, or fetching me do do something for you. You never have an actual conversation with me in Edo”
Parents: “Ehhnnn. Don’t you see other Nigerian children learning dea language? Look at your peers! Many of dem ah speaking Edo! Look at Igbo people, they make sure that dea children speak it or AT LEAST undastand it. Just look at you. *counts with fingers* You are 17. You can’t speak, you cant undastand. *claps in-between each word* WHAT CAN YOU DO?!? I just pray you marry an Edo gyel-o.”
Me: “For the love of God, don’t even start all that marriage talk when you guys interrogate and then threaten to send me to Nigeria every time you see me say “Hi” to a girl or see a picture of a girl on Faceb-.”
Parents: *interupts* “Did anyone say anything about a gyel?!? Unless it’s guilty conscience? Which gyel ah you talking about? What gyel are you hiding?!?!?
Me:

One more year…Just one. more. year. till. college.

Secretly,

I’m jealous of African kids, or any 1st generation immigrant for that matter, who can speak their native language. My parents didn’t “Americanize” me, actually they did the complete opposite of that, and  although they speak my language at home and sometimes use it when talking to me the never really taught me. It’s not that I didnt care, but when I was younger I never saw it as a big deal becuase I knew a bunch of other African kids who couldn’t speak their language, and I still do. But I get jealous when I see kids who can talk to their parents or other people of their tribe/ethnic group in their native tongue. I’ve even met a white person who can speak my own language better than me. That’s just a shame.
